The Level 4 Buying & Merchandising Assistant Apprenticeship was approved for delivery in May 2019 and has been designed by national retailers for people new to or already employed in retail organisations across fashion, food and consumer goods departments. Apprentices will support new product selection and development within their department and ensure that these new products are accurately added to the business product portfolio, as well as overseeing the testing and delivery of product samples.

Key responsibilities of a retail buyer include researching fashion trends and selecting product lines. Retail Merchandisers are responsible for maintaining an efficient flow of stock to ensure products are freely available in the places they are most likely to sell. Buyers and Merchandisers typically work together to deliver product ranges.
Buyers and Merchandisers can expect high levels of responsibility and occasional travel to trade fairs, fashion shows and supplier meetings. Aspiring Buyers need to be passionate about products and trends, while prospective Merchandisers should be able to demonstrate an understanding of what appeals to customers.
What are the learning outcomes?
Solvo Vir have co-designed the delivery programme for this particular Apprenticeship with a number of well known, national retailers, to ensure that the learner journey is meaningful and relevant to the demands and challenges of the role. The learner journey may also involve exposure to other retailers via varied workshop locations, guest speakers, bespoke podcasts and factory/supplier site visits. This 18 to 24-month programme is delivered via a series of specialist workshops, remote learning sessions and one-to-one workplace support. Apprentices will learn how to collate, distribute and analyse sales and performance reports, identify trends and trading patterns, and highlight anomalies.
